Genealogical and Historical Research Services

First Cousins Genealogy delivers diverse genealogical and historical research services. Erica’s frequently researches in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Ohio, New York, and Maryland. Her specialties include pre-1850 brick walls, forensic genealogy, genealogical writing, Pennsylvania court and institutional records, applying historical and legal context to research problems, and using DNA to determine kinship.

Genealogical Research

This service is ideal for solving brick wall problems, answering specific family research questions, building or extending family trees, or determining kinship with DNA. Research projects include the creation of one to two research questions, a research plan, and a written report that addresses the findings. Projects are booked in ten to twenty hour research and writing blocks. A consultation will be scheduled to understand previously completed research on the research.

Lineage Society Applications

This service is for those interested in qualifying for lineage society membership.  This work typically includes researching kinship that meets the lineage society’s standards, obtaining records needed to complete the application, and communicating with the selected society. If the research demonstrates the client is not eligible for the chosen society, a clear explanation of why will be included.

Document Retrieval

Erica frequently visits courthouses, archives, repositories, libraries, local history societies, and churches in Western Pennsylvania including Allegheny, Armstrong, Beaver, Butler, Clearfield, Crawford, Erie, Fayette, Greene, Indiana, Jefferson, Lawrence, Mercer, Venango, Washington, and Westmoreland Counties. Visits to other Pennsylvania counties, the Pennsylvania State Archives and courthouses and repositories in northern West Virginia, Ohio, and New York may also be possible.

Consultations

Erica is happy to meet with amateur and professional genealogists who may not need a research package but are looking for several hours of mentorship, feedback, or advice on their Pennsylvania research. Mentorship can also include providing feedback or editing work on research for publication in books or genealogical journals. Erica has published her research in genealogical journals and is an editor for a genealogical journal in Western Pennsylvania.

Forensic Genealogy Heirship Research

This service best suits lawyers looking for an experienced heirship researcher who can determine kinship for probate research and estate settlement. This includes DNA and documentary analysis to resolve inheritance disputes. Erica has experience drafting affidavits of death and heirship. This service would also benefit adoptees searching for their biological parents.
